NETLS Updates & Information 5/17

June 7 Membership Meeting

We’re looking for library supporters to fill upcoming vacancies on the NETLS Advisory Council. More information about the Advisory Council election process is here.

Tocker Grant Review
Steve, Jerry and I are always happy to review Tocker Grant applications before you submit your requests. If you would like us to review an application, please give us 3-4 days to review and get back to you. We will respond as soon as we can.

Pepsi Refresh Project

Pepsi is offering a series of grants through their Pepsi Refresh Project. From the first through fifteenth of each month online applications are accepted. One the applications are submitted the applicant promotes (begs) their cause in order to get the most votes for their project. Take a moment to see how the program works and vote for this project to add more computers to a public library.

Verizon Foundation Grants
The Verizon Foundation makes grants that help people to increase their literacy and educational achievement; avoid being an abuser or a victim of domestic violence; or achieve and sustain their health and safety. Eligible organizations seeking grants from the Verizon Foundation must be prepared to track and report program outcomes as well as specific results that demonstrate measurable human impact. In the grant application, organizations must indicate what outcomes are targeted through programming and what results, as specified on the grant application, the organization will measure.

Maximum award: $10,000. Eligibility: 501(c)3 organizations. Deadline: October 31, 2010.

Congratulations
NETLS libraries are among the recent Dollar General Summer Reading and Tocker Foundation grant recipients!

A message from ALA:

If your Friends group’s fiscal year ended December 31st, you have until today, May 17, to file the appropriate Form 990 with the IRS. Please see the information on the IRS website here. Note that if you have *not* filed at least the Form 990-N (e-Postcard) any of the last three years then your group is at risk of losing its tax exempt status. Your group qualifies to file the e-Postcard if your annual gross receipts are normally $25,000 or less. If gross receipts are more than $25,000 then your group may need to file Form 990-EZ or Form 990. Please see the IRS website for more information about filing requirements.

Filing extensions are available. File form 8868 by May 17 to request an extension.

There is a database established by the National Center for Charitable Statistics where organizations can check their status (http://nccsdataweb.urban.org/PubApps/statePicker.php?prog=epostcard&display=state).

Act now. If your annual gross receipts are less than $25,000 you can fill out the e-Postcard in just a few minutes. If your group must file a Form 990-EZ or Form 990 simply request an extension as noted above to avoid penalties.

Remember – if your group has not filed at least one version of Form 990 for any of the last three years, then you may lose your tax exempt status if you do not file by Monday!

Beth,

Beth Nawalinski Marketing & Communications Director
